SCDBA MINUTES: SPRING MEETING 2008

The spring meeting of the South Central District Bandmasters Association was held May 5, 2008 at Vance High School. Chairman John Mode called the meeting to order at 6:57 pm.

John also thanked The Music Center and Jason Gilchrest for providing dinner, thanks to Rob Carrington, our host at Vance.

A moment of silence was given to our departed friend and wonderful advocate for our district,

Mr. David Whitesides, Assistant Band Director at Shelby High School.

The minutes of the January 25, 2008 Winter Business Meeting discussed and approved.

Richard Holmes gave the Treasurer’s Report and cited that we have money. Money from the marching band account will be transferred to the marching band committee and Mr. Tommy Smith will be taking care of this account. Motion to accept the treasurer’s report was approved.

OLD BUSINESS

District Auditions: Will be held January 10^th, 2009 at South Point HS.

All District Clinic: January 30-31, 2009: Ken & Felicia Davis / Josh Stevenson @ Mooresville HS.

Auditorium renovations were discussed for the future. Ken will keep us up to date as to how the renovations will affect the district clinic. Snow date is the following week, February 6-7, 2009.

District Clinician/Commission Committee: Scott Clowes reported that we still need recommendations of clinicians or composers. If we are to maintain the level of quality clinicians, we need the input of the membership. This would also go for judges of our concert band festival. We also need constructive comments about the previous panel of judges for concert festival.

No commission scheduled for 2009. Brian Balmages has agreed to write a commission for the district for the year 2010 and Robert Sheldon will write the commission work for 2011. Motion was made and approved.

Middle School Contest: Tracy Humphries, @ CATA in Monroe

• Still looking for the sight-reading music for contest
• Date on the calendar run into the CMS calendar. Motion was brought forth to change the date. Motion was discussed and approved.

Date of contest: March 18-20, 2009.

High School Contest: James Phillips, @ Shelby High School March 31-April 3, 2009.

• Grades II-IV March 31-April 1, 2009
• Grades IV/V-VI April 2-3, 2009

Register early and if you are doing a IV/V split, you will go on the V/VI dates. Once the schedule has been released, you will not be able to change your time or schedule. We lost two bands due to schedule changes this year. Conflicts are going to happen, so plan ahead and remember you can always go out of district as long as you go through the appropriate steps. Motion for dates were discussed and approved.

Solo and Ensemble Contest: Neil Underwood May 2, 2009.

• Neil was very pleased with the event held this past weekend
• Numbers were up this year
• High School directors need to adhere to the deadlines due to the number of students
• Neil will hire five judges
• Suggestions are always welcomed

Honors Band Clinic/Auditions: Keith James, March 7, 2009

Following dates reported:

• Auditions held at East Davidson HS/Brown MS
• Clinic held at UNCG April 24-26, 2009

Honors Band Clinic Report: Richard Holmes

• Honors Band committee will be revised and look at the scales and percussion solo
• Honors Band will be held at UNCG, but are looking at other venues as to give a rotation to this event. If any pros or cons to the event held at the School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, please let Richard know.
• NCBA State President, Phillip Riggs, will be looking into the state Concert Band Festival that is listed in our state by-laws in November.
• Feedback on convention. Did you like the new setup? Clinics? We need to know as to set forth our next convention.
• Talking about more sessions at convention, do we want the option.
• Foard HS and Bunker Hill HS have applied to switch from our district to the Northwest and was approved as of the 2008-2009 school year.
• Deadline to play at convention was extended and you will need three letters of recommendation along with a recording.

Richard also thanked those who helped at the New Music Clinic.

Marching Committee Report: Keith James

• Have any concerns about the district festivals that are being planned, please share those with me so that I can report them back to the committee.
• Judging clinic at Western Carolina.
• Website updated

Young Band Directors/Directors Award: Neil Underwood

This award is being formulated to recognize more of our folks and the criteria for this award will be brought forth to the executive board soon. Please talk to Neil about this award.

Award of Excellence: John pointed out the criteria for this award that was talked about at the All-District meeting in January. We will discuss the criteria at the fall meeting. The board would like your input.

Judges Committee: Scott Clowes

• Meeting for the State Concert Festival List criteria is being established and this summer will be meeting. Input for this list needs to be given to Scott so he can present our input.
• Masterworks list is being developed as well. Are marches also to be played when playing a masterworks piece? These questions are ones that need to be answered as we move in this direction.
• Selected 11 names for MS and 18 names for HS for to be called for 2009 festival judges.
• Names were read from HS and MS lists
• Need feedback from our past judges is important

New Band Director Orientation: John brought this up and it will continue with Keith james heading up this event.

Dates for the calendar were approved.

NEW BUSINESS

REPRESENTATIVE ELECTION RESULTS:

· Bart Tulbert elected (HS) 2 year term

· Jennifer Isenhour elected (MS) 2 year term

Announcements

• Fall Meeting will be held on Sept. 8 at UNCC.
• Various others spoke about Summer Clinics

John thanked the body for his tenure as president.

John then reported that the next spring meeting will be May 4, 2009 held again at Vance HS.

ADJOURNMENT: No further business being brought before the members, John Mode adjourned the meeting at 8:04 pm.
