SCDBA MINUTES: WINTER MEETING 2006
The winter
meeting of the South Central District Bandmasters Association was held January
27, 2006 at the Mooresville ARP Church in conjunction with the District Band
Clinic at Mooresville HS. The meeting was called to order by chairman Blair Smith at 2:19 pm.
The minutes of the September 12, 2005
Fall Business Meeting were read and approved.
Richard
Holmes gave the TreasurerÕs Report and cited that more funds were to be
expended this year, in large part due to the commissioned work. His report was
approved.
Mekel
Rogers introduced Ray Linkous from Carolina Crown who introduced an outreach
program available to band directors
from the Crown and announced
upcoming events.
Blair also thanked Howren Music Company for providing lunch, and thanks to The Music Center, Brook-Mays, Music and Arts, etc.
District
Auditions: Mark
Reese reported:
1.
Securing enough judges was a problem this year, as some directors failed to
attend.
2. On-line
registration greatly streamlined the process

Audition ran very smoothly

Constitutional
Change(s) Proposal:
Richard Holmes
The
following constitution changes were unanimously approved:
1. Membership:
On-line registration REQUIRED by deadline date for participation in all
district events.
2. Organization:
Changes on board makeup to now include two Òat largeÕ members each from HS and
MS directors.
3. Meetings:
A Spring meeting (date TBA) was added to calendar.
4. Business
meetings will now follow RobertÕs Rules of Order
5. Voting
members of the SCDBA Board of Directors will be limited to the following
officers:
Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer, At-large members (4),
Past Chairman and Webmaster
Award
of Excellence: Jim
Hill voted as 2006-07 recipient.

discussion was entertained regarding judge selection without any action being
taken.

James proposed a $100.00/day honorarium for Underwood as site host for this

Clinic/ Festival:

to be held at Lenoir-Rhyne College on Feb. 18-18, 2006.
2. Jazz
Festival also to be held at LRC on May 5-6, 2006.

bands and combos encouraged to attend and participate.
Solo
and Ensemble Contest:

1. To be
held at N. Lincoln HS on May 6, 2006 (deadline 4/6/06)
2. Change
in fee schedule was approved as follows:
$2.50
per student up to 9 in group.
$25.00
per ensemble 10 members and over.
3. Every
participant to receive a certificate.
4. Neil
reported that last yearÕs event lost money, encouraged more participation.

Update
1. Lapel
pins will be obtained for those who have performed at convention.
2. Hall of
Fame inductees to be listed on website.
District
Line Committee:
Scott Clowes reported that no changes will be made at the present time. The
current lines will remain Òas isÓ pending the vote to be taken on the proposal
currently on the state website at Honors Band. Some problems reported with
bands crossing district lines for events.
Marching
Band Committee:
Blair Smith reported:
1.Keith
James will replace Blair as our district representative.
2.Problems
concerning the ratings sheets addressed again:
Bottom end numbers will be removed
All numbers will be ÒpushedÓ up
Box Ò4Ó now
classed Superior
All ÒeffectÓ words removed from performance sheets
3. Changes
are being made and considered based on received comments.
4.
Reportedly, 82% of bands went to at least one state sanctioned contest in 2005.
District
Band: Students have been asking for
something other than Bar-b-que for Friday dinner. Vote taken. Blair will talk
to Ken Davis about a possible change.
Jazz
Band Auditions: Directors reminded that their
attendance is REQUIRED for both auditions and performance.
No further
business being brought before the members, the meeting was adjourned by Blair
Smith at 3:43 pm.
