SCDBA MINUTES: SPRING MEETING 2007

The spring meeting of the South Central District Bandmasters Association was held May 7, 2007 at Vance High School. Chairman John Mode called the meeting to order at 6:56 pm.

John also thanked The Music Center and Jason Gilchrist for providing dinner, thanks to Rob Carrington, our host at Vance.

The minutes of the January 26, 2007 Winter Business Meeting discussed and approved.

Richard Holmes gave the Treasurer’s Report and cited that he would deposit the plaque money as soon as he was free to do so. Report was approved.

OLD BUSINESS

Dates for All District were discussed due to winter holidays.

Commission Committee gave its report. Richard Holmes discussed the procedure and how many members that should be on the committee. Report was approved.

Constitution/Bylaws change

1. Procedures were updated for District Band and Solo and Ensemble reports.

2. Missing the Deadline for Registration for membership was added.

Motion was read at the previous meeting and discussed. Motion was second and approved.

All District Clinic: January 25-26, 2008: Ken & Felicia Davis / Josh Stevenson @ Mooresville HS.

Clinicians to be:

· Mekel Rogers, MS

· Willie Halphin, 9-10

· Timothy Rhea, 11-12

John R. Bourgeois has basically turned us down for life due to the Marine Corps Celebration takes place during the same weekend. He would be gladly accept if we ever change the weekend from being on the last weekend of the month of January. Snow date is the following week.

Middle School Contest: Jim Hill

• Jim and Stephanie are stepping down
• Tracy Humphries will be taking over. Board approved her position.
• Date of contest: March 12-14, 2008.

High School Contest: James Phillips, @ Shelby High School March 17-20, 2008.

• Grades II-IV March 17-18, 2007
• Grades IV/V-VI March 19-20, 2007
• Judges fee has been increased by the state and we will need to increase the HS fee to $175.00

Jazz Report: Jerry Lowe

• Alexander Central will be hosting the clinic held Feb. 15-16, 2008
• Auditions will be held Jan.12, 2008
• Festival held at Grandview MS in Hickory and the best festival ever held
• Next years Dates are May 2-3, 2008

Solo and Ensemble Contest: Neil Underwood May 3, 2008.

• Neil was very pleased with the event held this past weekend
• Numbers have leveled off the last three years
• Suggestions are always welcomed

Honors Band Clinic/Auditions: Keith James, March 8, 2008

Following dates reported:

• Auditions held at East Davidson HS/Brown MS
• Clinic held at NC School of the Arts April 18-20, 2008

NEW BUSINESS

District Clinic Sight-Reading

• Criteria based upon sight-reading of concert band festival. Other Districts are doing this.
• Dr. Harbinson will compose each level of sight-reading. Charge is $500.00 for all three levels.
• Discussion and motion was made.
• To use this criteria for our all district auditions for sight-reading. Motion passed.

Richard Holmes thanked several band directors for helping with the new music clinic.

At All-State Band, a motion was approved to move to a 2 day clinic that approved. This might take place at the 2008 All-State, but most likely 2009 All-State Band. Scott Clowes reported on what happened at the meeting. Richard then reported that one of our own, Dr. Eric Harris will be conducting the 2009 MS Honors Band.

John then reported that the next spring meeting will be May 5, 2008 held again at Vance HS.

Marching Committee Report… Keith James

• Trying to hold one day clinics across the state
• Judging clinic at Western Carolina.
• Website updated

REPORTS

Judges Committee, Keith James and Scott Clowes

• Need judges for the list and current information. Currently have a little more than 100 names
• Selected 17 for MS and 21 for HS
• Names were read from HS and MS lists

CEU Credit, John has made contact with UNCC to possibly give 1.0 CEU credit for activities that we do during the school year. A plan is being devised and more discussion at the fall meeting.

New Band Director Orientation, John presented a topic that is being pursued by others in the state and a topic that we need to address to help our young directors out. John would like some help in starting this and asked the membership if they would like to start this. Discussion followed. Possible meeting time would be Sept. 10 prior to the Fall meeting. A consensus of the group was favorable in starting this.

REPRESENTATIVE ELECTION RESULTS:

· Rob Owens elected (HS) 2 year term

· Windy Fullagar elected (MS) 2 year term

DISTRICT AUDITIONS DATE:

• Discussion due to private schools not being in school and other conflicts
• Jazz Auditions will still be paired up with Orchestra on Jan. 19
• Motion was made to move auditions this year to Jan. 12 due to the private schools still being out of school for this year only and second. Registration date will still be the same, Dec. 5, 2007.
• Motion passed

Announcements

• Fall Meeting will be held on Sept. 10 at UNCC.
• Various others spoke about Summer Clinics

ADJOURNMENT: No further business being brought before the members, John Mode adjourned the meeting at 7:58 pm.
