SCDBA MINUTES: SPRING MEETING 2006

 

The spring meeting of the South Central District Bandmasters Association was held May 8, 2006 at Vance High School. Chairman Blair Smith called the meeting to order at 6:56 pm.

 

The minutes of the January 28, 2006 Winter Business Meeting discussed and approved.

 

Richard Holmes gave the Treasurer’s Report and cited that although our cash reserves are good we are limited in our general fund amount due to previous obligations: report was approved.

 

Blair also thanked The Music Center and Jason Gilchrest for providing dinner, thanks to Rob Carrington our host at Vance.

 

Bill Malambri announced the Winthrop University Invitational would be held November 17-18, 2006.

 

Larry Marks from UNC-C announced the coming completion of the facilities at Charlotte. Some changes in faculty next year are anticipated.

OLD BUSINESS

 

Election of Officers:

                                    1. High School Representatives (2) at large

                                    2. Middle School Representatives (2) at large

 

Largest vote totals will serve 2-year term, second winner, 1 year.

 

Fall Meeting: September 11, 2006: to be hosted by Dr. Lumpkin and Dr, Marks @ UNC-Charlotte.

Meal sponsor not yet confirmed.

All-District Auditions: January 6, 2007: to be held @Olympic HS, Mark and Anne Reese, Jonathan Rudd,

hosts.

 

All District Clinic: January 26-27, 2007: Ken & Felicia Davis / Josh Stevenson @ Mooresville HS.

Clinicians to be:

·       Leslie Clowes, MS

·       Sean O’Loughlin, 9-10

·      James Curnow (w/commission) 11-12

 

Discussion on Friday evening meal, barbeque vs. something else. Discussion tabled until fall meeting.

 

Honors Band Auditions: David Deese, East Davidson HS/Brown MS March 3, 2007.                        

 

Middle School Contest: Jim Hill

 

• Discussion on changing date to week before HS contest
• Waiting for confirmation from Wingate regarding fee waiver
• Vote taken on date of contest: March 20-22, 2007.
• Second choice date: March 14-16, 2007.

                                   

High School Contest: James Phillips, @ Shelby High School March 27-30, 2007.

• Grades II-IV March 27-28, 2007
• Grades V-VI March 29-30, 2007

                                   

Honors Band Clinic: Following dates reported:

• 2007: UNC-Chapel Hill April 27-29, 2007
• 2008: NC School of the Arts April 18-20, 2008

 

Solo and Ensemble Contest: Neil Underwood May 5, 2007.

• Neil encouraged more participation from the district, suggestion made to move event to a weekday.
• Some discussion entertained regarding a move to UNC-Charlotte
• Both items tabled for new board to discuss.

                                   

REPORTS

 

NCBA Update Blair Smith reported that a “gripe committee” is looking at the solos and correct problems where

they exist regarding Honors Band. Dates for next year announced.

 

Marching Committee Report… Blair Smith

• Sheets have been adjusted.
• Box 4 expanded to include “superior” rating
• Website updated
• Descriptors (words) on front and back of sheet brought into line
• Numbers revised
• Adjudicator’s manual has been revised
• State (DPI) considering proposal for credit for marching band during school

 

Jazz Report

• Jazz band is alive and well!
• 12 high schools and 4 middle schools participated in recent Jazz Festival
• Directors encouraged to participate

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

WEBMASTER: Richard Holmes

• Only one mass mailing will occur this fall.
• He needs to be made aware of any new schools/director changes so the mass mailing does not exclude any new school.
• On line registration for SCDBA for All-District Auditions will continue next year
• Marching contests can be listed on website: contract Richard first

 

CELEBRATIONS: Blair Smith

• Job changes/openings announced
• New band directors recognized

 

MARCHING BAND CONTESTS: Various contests announced

 

REPRESENTATIVE ELECTION RESULTS:

·       Scott Clowes elected (HS) 2year term

·       Leslie Clowes elected (MS) 2 year term

·       James Phillips elected (HS) 1 year term

·       Mekel Rogers elected (MS) 1 year term

 

CLOSING REMARKS: Blair Smith recognized and thanked for his service to the district and for his

tenure as chairman

 

ADJOURNMENT: No further business being brought before the members, Blair adjourned the meeting Smith at

8:00 pm.
