SCDBA MINUTES FALL MEETING 2005

 

 

The fall meeting of the South Central District BandmasterŐs Assn. was held in the Barnhardt Center on the campus of UNC-Charlotte on Monday, Sept. 12, 2005. The business meeting was held at 7:00pm following dinner. Blair Smith chair, presided.

 

Don Peach of the Brook Mays group was recognized and thanked for the dinner provided by the company.

 

Minutes of the last meeting were read by the Vice-Chair and approved. Richard Holmes presented the treasurerŐs report, which was also approved.

 

Request was made and the ŇhatÓ passed for donations to the Social Fund.

 

A greeting and welcome was given by our hosts: Dr. Royce Lumpkin and Dr. Larry Marks from UNC-C. Will Campbell, director of Jazz Studies at UNC-C was introduced. Dr. Marks issued an invitation for those interested in participating in the Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble.

 

Dr. Lorrie Crochet brought greetings and announced details concerning the Winthrop Invitational on Nov. 17-18, 2005.

 

Mekel Rogers made a presentation representing Carolina Crown.

 

All area music dealers recognized and thanked.

 

130 registered for meeting.

 

 

Committee Reports were received as follows:


Handbook: (R. Holmes) Vote taken and passed to retain hard copy of district handbook, which will be the same as in the past with the exception of the deletion of all district registration forms which are now available on-line. 42 members responded to survey in the Spring. Reminder that the mailing announcing this meeting will be the ONLY blanket mailing from the District this year. Procedure for using the Yahoo group for our correspondence was outlined again. Registration for all District events will be on-line now and in the future. Membership roster and audition results will be available on-line thru a password protected access.

 

High School Contest-Festival: (J. Phillips) Considerable discussion was received on announced contest dates of April 4-7, 2006. Due to spring break conflicts in a few of the systems some alternative proposals were discussed , from splitting the contest 2 days in March and 2 in April to changing the date altogether. Proposal by S. Clowes as approved was to move the 2006 Contest/Festival to N. Lincoln High School for this year only and change the dates to March 21-24, 2006. James Phillips will retain position as Chair. Registration deadline will be February 21, 2006.

 

 

District Auditions: (Mark and Anne Reese, Jon Rudd) Auditions to be held 1/7/06 at Olympic High. No forms will be distributed, use the online registration on website. Solo cuts will be to play only first page of solo, for district audition only. Students will still be responsible for entire solo at State Honors Band. Registration deadline is midnight on 12/7/04. Registration will not be complete or students entered until check is received. Performance order will be determined by order in which check is received. Registration site should be active by mid to late October.

 

Western Region Jazz Auditions: Tom Moncrief reported auditions will be held 1/14/06 at

            East Mecklenburg HS. Optional improv solo on website. All percussion must audition on set, no separate mallet audition will be allowed. Registration deadline 12/14/05.

 

All-District Clinic: Ken Davis reported clinic will be held at Mooresville on 1/27-28/06 with

            the snow make-up date of 2/3-4/06. Students playing background instruments are encouraged to audition. Some concerns from the CitizenŐs Center were reported, citing trash left by the students at the Friday supper.

 

Howren Scholarship: (Felicia Davis) Application one website, one submission per school.

            Cannon Camp scholarship will not include meals, only tuition. Committee will meet

            at district in January, at which time Doug NeSmith will assume chair of committee.

 

Western Region Jazz Band Clinic: Jerry Lowe reported the event will be held on February

            17-18, 2006 at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory. Clinicians will be Will Campbell and Bill Hannah.

 

All State Honors Band Auditions (9-10): Keith James reported the auditions will be held March 4, 206 at East Davidson HS. Registration deadline Feb. 15, 2006. The solo list is on the website.

 

Middle School Contest-Festival: (Jim Hill) Contest will be held at Wingate on March 8-10, 2006. Registration and fee of $150.00 due by February 8, 2006. Judges confirmed are: Pat Wylie, Ed Kieffer and Ed Whitner. SR judge TBA.

 

All-State Honors Band: No report. Date: April 21-23, 2006 @UNC-G John Locke, Host. This venue will be changed next year due to building renovations at UNC-G.

 

Western Region Jazz Festival: (Jerry Lowe) Event to be held at LRC in Hickory on May 5-6, 2006. Combos of any size will be accepted. Alternate site: Asheboro April 28-29, 2006. Deadline: 4/5/06 for festival registration.

 

Solo and Ensemble: (Neil Underwood) to be held at N. Lincoln HS on 5/6/06. Registration deadline 4/6/06. Contest in red last year with 3 judges. Support the contest.

 

Judges Committee : No report given.

 

State Report: Blair Smith reported itŐs still there.

 

Marching Band Committee: Blair Smith reported that there will be 29 State Sanctioned marching events this fall. Tommy Smith has assumed duties as State Contest administrator, coordinating the contests and the adjudication process.

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

  1. Scott Clowes distributed map of state districts as they currently exist and solicited comments and response to the survey , preferably by email.
  2. Richard Holmes announced that the proposed Constitution and By-laws revision are located on the website and will be voted on in January at the Winter/All-District Meeting.
  3. Marching contests were announced and bands solicited to participate.

 

 

All business concluded, the meeting was adjourned at 8:50pm.
