SCDBA  MINUTES  FALL MEETING 2004

 

The fall meeting of the South Central District BandmasterÕs Assn. was held in the Barnhardt Center on the campus of UNC-Charlotte on Monday, Sept. 13, 2004.The business meeting was held at 7:00pm following dinner. Blair Smith, chair was absent due to a school commitment and the meeting was conducted in his absence by the Vice-Chair.

 

Minutes of the last meeting were neither read nor approved, as they were not available. The treasurerÕs report was presented and approved.

 

A greeting and welcome was given by our hosts: Dr. Royce Lumpkin and Dr. Larry Marks from UNC-C. Dr. Marks announced the appointment of Walter Hartley as composer-in-residence and issued an invitation for those interested in participating in concert band on Wednesday nights.

 

Dr. Bill Malambri announced details concerning the Winthrop Invitational on Nov. 19-20 and the new wind conducting degree to be offered at Winthrop.

 

A presentation was made to Mark Reese in appreciation of his tenure as past District Chairman.

 

 

Committee Reports were received as follows:


Handbook: Everyone needs to get updated information submitted immediately.

 

District Auditions: (Mark and Anne Reese, Jon Rudd) Auditions to be held 1/8/05 at Olympic High. No forms will be distributed.. use typed forms on website. Solo cuts will be announced later. Registration deadline 12/8/04.

 

Western Region Jazz Auditions: Tom Moncrief reported auditions will be held 1/15/05 at

            Independence HS, meeting at 1:00pm auditions at 2:00pm. Registration fee of $10.00

            Two bands will be selected. Registration deadline 12/15/04.

 

All-District Clinic: Ken Davis reported clinic will be held at Mooresville on 1/28-29/05 with

            With the alternate date of 2/4-5/05.  $10.00 reg. Fee. Students playing background

            instruments are encouraged to attend. Request made NOT to give parents the DavisÕ home phone number.

 

Howren Scholarship: (Felicia Davis) Application in handbook, one submission per school.

            Cannon Camp scholarship will not include meals, only tuition. Committee will meet

            at district in January.

 

Western Region Jazz Band Clinic: Jerry Lowe reported the event will be held on February

            18-19,2005 at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory.

 

Middle School Contest-Festival: (Jim Hill) Contest will be held at Wingate on March 9-11, 2005. Registration and fee of $150.00 due by February 9, 2005.  No judges confirmed yet.

 

All State Honors Band Auditions (9-10): Keith James reported the auditions will be held March 5th. At a location TBA, Deadline Feb. 14, 2005.

 

High School Contest-Festival: (James Phillips) Contest to be held at Shelby High School on March 15-18, 2005. Same format as 2004. Grades II-IV on Tues and Wed. and Grades V & VI on Thurs. and Friday. Reg. Fee $150.00 ea. Band, due 2/15/05. No judges yet.

 

All-State Honors Band: No report. Date: April 22-24, 2005 @UNC-G John Locke, Host

 

Western Region Jazz Festival: Ted Neely reported event to be held at LRC in Hickory on 4/15/05. Info handout. Noted proposal of Jazz as an independent section of NCMEA will be discussed at Convention. Deadline: 3/15/05 for festival.

 

Solo and Ensemble: (Neil Underwood) to be held at N. Lincoln HS on 5/7/05. Registration deadline 4/7/05.

 

District Clinic Clinicians: Keith James indicated that we need more nominations for MS clinicians and a need of suggestions concerning commissioned works for 9-10 band and MS band.

 

Website: Richard Holmes has agreed to serve as Webmaster for the SCDBA website effective immediately.

 

State Report: Neil encouraged all members to attend and get involved with NCMEA district meetings at convention.  Some discussion brewing regarding splitting the state into 8 sections (again). Honors band fees will be going up, exact increase to be determined n Board Meeting at convention. Neil also highlighted upcoming band events at November convention and announced that Jerry Lowe will become the next chair of the Jazz section. Report also made regarding the Marching Band Committee, that all contests using the state sheets are listed on the website.

                                        

NEW BUSINESS

 

 

  1. New sight-reading procedure announced by Richard Holmes for the committee.... will be voted on at NCMEA convention.
  2. Webmaster, Richard Holmes strongly encouraged all members to enroll in our Yahoo group in order to receive district mail and announcements. This venue will eventually become our main communication link.
  3. Scott Clowes proposed changes in the Contest/Festival ratings matrix concerning the ÒUnanimous stage scoreÓ ruleÉ will be discussed again and voted on in November.
  4. District marching contests were shamelessly plugged by their advocates.

 

 

All business concluded, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45pm.
