Frequently Asked Questions about SCDBA All-District Auditions
What do I do to register my students?
First, the director must be a member of the South Central District Bandmasters Association and NCMEA. You will need to register your students by using the online registration page link in the gray box at the top of this page. Once all students are added, print the form and send along with the audition fees to the Audition Chairman address. Your registration is not complete unless the check is postmarked by the audition deadline, which is 30 days prior to the audition.
Please note: If you register students to audition, you will be expected to judge.
|
Do I need to send a seperate check for each level of students (11/12, 9/10 and Middle) that I register?
No you do not. Just mail a hard copy of your registration sheet from the online registration page, a copy of your NAfME Card and make sure the check is the correct amount by the deadline. If the amount is not correct, your registration will not be complete. The registration fee is $10.00 per student.
Make the check payable to SCDBA.
Please note: The SCDBA only accepts checks from schools, band boosters or SCDBA member band directors. No checks from parents accepted.

When is the deadline for audition registration?
Your registration form must be postmarked one month (30 days) prior to auditions. Your registrstion will not be considered complete unless the hard copy you print from the online registration page, a copy of your NAfME card and the audition fees are mailed and postmarked by this date! The online registration will stop accepting registration informationaround 5 PM on the first deadline.
Band Directors can also register students late provided that they registered at least one student by the FIRST registeration deadline. See "Can I add students after the audition registration deadline?' for more information.
|
Can I add students after the audition registration deadline?
Yes, but your school had to register students by the first deadline. See below.
First Deadline: Thirty days prior to event. Students from a school must be registered by this date to register students later. Registration Fee for this deadline is $10.00 for each student.
Second Deadline: After the thirty day deadline up to one week before the auditions. Registration Fee for this deadline is $20.00 for each student.
Final Deadline: Less than one week to auditions to the close of auditions registration (8:45 am) on the day of auditions. Registration Fee for this deadline is $40.00 for each student.
|
If I have a student that was registered and can not make the auditions, could I send another student in his/her place?
No. You may not substitute another student for that student. See "Can I add students after the registration deadline?"
|
Do the students have to be enrolled in band class?
The students need to be enrolled in a band class that receives one unit of credit. This also means that any student auditioning on String Bass must be registered IN A BAND CLASS.
|
Can students audition on more than instrument?
No, but percussionists may audition on more than one percussion instrument. If a woodwind or brass player auditions on more than one insrtrument, he/she will be disqualified.
|
If a percussion student auditions on more than one percussion instrument, do they have to pay a double or triple registration fee?
No. Each percussion student pays only a $10.00 registration fee
(unless the student is registered late, then the fee is either $20.00 or $40.00).
|
What are the requirements to audition for the SCDBA All-District Band?
Students at all levels will prepare scales/rudiments and a solo. There will also be sight reading. The specific solos, scales/rudiments and the required ranges for the scales are available for you to download from the gray box at the top of the webpage.
Please note: If a solo for any grade level is a one page solo the student should preapre the entire solo. If the solo is two ore more pages the student should prepare the first page.
|
Do the scales have to be memorized?
Yes. Middle School should tongue all major scales and slur the chromatic, and 9/10 and 11/12 students should be prepared to tongue OR slur their major scales (decided by chairperson), and slur the chromatic. Go to the Honors Band page of the State NCBA Site for scale sheets.
Middle School
- Students are now required to play ALL six major scales in a 3.5-minute time limit. The chromatic scale is not included in the time limit. The scales will be played in the following order (listed here in concert pitch): G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab
High School
- Students will be required to play ALL scales in a 3-minute time limit. The scales will be played in the following order (listed here in concert pitch):
- 9/10 (G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db)
- 11/12 (D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db
A list of the scales (in order) will be placed on the stand for the students to see. The list they see will be in THEIR WRITTEN pitch, NOT concert pitch!
|
How should I teach the scales?
At ALL high school grade levels, students may be asked to play them tongued OR slurred. Middle School scales should ALL be tongued. Chromaticscales are slurred for middle and high school grades (except trombone, which are legato tongued). Once again: ALL SCALES ARE MEMORIZED.
|
Are there guidelines for the sightreading?
Yes! Our sightreading examples are composed specifically for the auditions, and the composer uses the following parameters from our Contest Sightreading Guidelines:
• Middle School sightreading is based on Grade III parameters.
• 9/10 sightreading is based on Grade V parameters.
• 11/12 sightreading is based on Grade VI parameters.
Download the criteria in the gray box above for the pdf file.
|
Can the students use their own copy of the solo, or do they have to use the one provided for them?
Students may use their own copy. We simply provide one to illustrate which section of the solo to play.

DIRECTORS WILL NEED TO BRING THEIR MENC CARD TO AUDITIONS. You will be asked to show your MENC card when you register.
|
Will there be refreshments for the students?
Refreshments will be provided in the cafeteria. Students will be able to purchase food, candy and sodas from the local band booster organization.
|

|
If my students make the band, how will they be housed?
Each school/director is responsible for arranging the housing and supervision of their students for the entire weekend. More specific information will be made available on the day of auditions.
|
If I do not have any students make the band, should I still try and come to the clinic?
Yes. We vote on many important issues at the business meeting on Friday afternoon.
